The history of the Catholic Church is full of the heroic stories of Roman Catholic Saints and holy men and women – ordinary people who have lived truly extraordinary lives. These saints point the way to heaven for us. Their lives were not lives of luxury, comfort, power and riches. Instead, their stories are one of sacrifice, difficulties, trials – for some, including the ultimate sacrifice of offering their very lives for the Faith.
And yet, despite these, if one were to read their stories, they have one thing in common: despite a life of utmost suffering and difficulty, all of them have within them true, profound peace and joy. Theirs is a joy that can only come from the very Joy of Christ. Many people waste their entire lives pursuing worldly joys that cannot fully satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Our saints show us the way to true joy – joy that lasts not just in this life, but for all eternity.
